Design Engineer - Product

Position Summary

The Product Design Engineer – working with the Development and NVH Engineers, the Product Design Engineer is responsible for the design and development of automotive soft trim systems including the management of the design process. With the direction of the Senior Product Engineer/Design Manager, this position will ensure all design, engineering, and prototype deliverables are met which meets or exceeds customer and internal specifications and requirements.

 

Key Functions & Responsibilities of the Product Design Engineer

  • Define the product functional analysis (based on standard) and translate customer specifications and internal requirements into clear product performance criteria. Propose corporate commitments on these criteria and obtain approvals.
  • Working with the Development and NVH engineers to ensure that the design meets the defined performance and acoustical criteria. Participate in design reviews.
  • Lead the product validations for programs. Define, plan, and follow the product validations (CAE and physical tests). Define the product improvements to meet the specifications.
  • According to simulation/validation/measurement results, define necessary product geometry/interface improvements to meet the specifications. Lead the prototype development process and implement design improvements.
  • Develop the Design Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (DFMEA), and other engineering documents as specified by the customer.
  • Develop Design Verification Plan and Report (DVP&R), obtain customer approval, and initiate all laboratory, bench and simulated product tests in compliance with the DVP&R and support the customer during vehicle testing.
  • Organize and develop feasibility designs and engineering requirements for the entire project.
  • Provide feasibility input to support Studio Design & Package Requirements.
  • Attend, support, and participate in Design and Engineering Reviews both internally with manufacturing and externally with the customer.
  • Create and maintain a Master Section Package and support Master section drawing development.
  • Work with advanced engineering, styling, and technical center on the development of the concept and/or feasibility vehicle.
  • Work with and direct engineering design to ensure all engineering parameters, needs, and customer requirements are being fulfilled on a timely basis.
  • Coordinate and follow engineering responsibilities from design concept, through prototype build, pilot, production, and life of the program.
  • Participate in all customer meetings which impact the design and engineering of the soft trim system.

 



Qualifications

Required Experience, Skills & Abilities of the Product Design Engineer

  • Bachelor of Science- Engineering degree (BSME Preferred)
  • Catia V5
  • 5-7 years in Product Development/Design Engineering in Interior Soft Trim preferred
  • Experience in DFMEA, DVP&R, Design and Development Process is required.
  • Able to work in a multicultural environment.
  • Must be result-oriented with strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Must have the ability to make a technical presentation in front of the customer as needed.
  • English required; (Japanese language skills a plus).
  • Availability to travel up to 25%, with some international travel.
